The Animal Rescue Squad, Bicholim and Forest Department on Tuesday seized 23 kg wild boar meat worth over Rs 3,500 and arrested a person from Maulinguem-Bicholim in this connection.
According to reports, after the ARS team received information that some people from Maulinguem and surrounding areas are hunting wild boar since the last few days, the ARS team was on a lookout for the persons involved in the illegal trade.
Acting on a tip-off that a wild boar was killed on Monday night at Maulinguem and the meat will be sold on Tuesday; ARS Chief Amrut Singh swung into action and informed the Forest Department.
At about 3.30 pm, the Forest Department and ARS went to Naikwada-Maulinguem and seized 23 kg wild boar meat, which was placed behind a house in Naikwada-Maulinguem.
One Jitendra Pundalik Ugvekar from the same village was found in possession of the meat.
The Forest Department arrested Jitendra Ugvekar and confiscated the meat and the weapons used for the slaughter.
Speaking to Herald, ARS Chief Singh said wild boars are killed for meat in several parts of Bicholim, including Mayem, Maulinguem, Vathadev, Kudchirem and Ladfem.
