2.5 lakh stranded as Phailin triggers floods

Heavy downpour triggered by Cyclone Phailin on Monday led to floods in several rivers in Odisha, leaving more than 2.5 lakh people marooned in Balasore. The state government described the situation in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts as 'critical'. In the aftermath of the cyclone, the Odisha government deployed the armed forces besides NDRF teams for rescue and relief operations in Balasore. The death toll in Odisha mounted to 25 on Monday, with four more persons perishing in several areas of the state. Most of the casualties were caused by wall collapse, uprooted trees and in floods in Odisha, while a massive number of people were injured, officials said.
