The construction of Ganges Barrage down to the river Gorai can save more than 25 million people living in greater Khulna, Jessore and Kushia and areas from the attack of increasing salinity and arsenic hazard and can boost agro-based economy by reviving at least one hundred large or small rivers and their tributaries which are either dead or severely damaged during the last 50 years due to bad effects of Farrakka Barrage, unplanned interventions by water development authority and changes in the main flow of the river Ganges and the Padma. All this view was expressed and worked out at an workshop arranged by ADAB, Khulna chapter in cooperation with the Environment and Forest Ministry and UNDP.
