26mm rain in Rawalpindi and 31mm in Islamabad, low-lying areas inundated: Rain sets off alarm yet Leh remains in limit

Heavy rains with gusty winds and hailstrom lashed the city on Friday, raising water level at Leh Nullah up to 13 feet and caused power outages with low-lying parts of the city getting inundated. District administration, Civil Defence Department and Rescue 1122 remained on high alert to deal with any emergency. The Met Office recorded 26mm rain in Rawalpindi and 31mm in Islamabad while wind was blowing at a speed of 46 km/hour. The day was overcast. Heavy shower lasted from 11am to 3pm, bringing the mercury down to 25 Celsius and almost blocking all outdoor activities. Fears that Leh Nullah can be overflowed did not spare the city for a while all through the day. Progress of the City District Government was exposed when the city was posing a flood-like scene only after a three-hour rain. Rainwater entered houses and shops at Mochi Bazaar, Dingi Khoi, Raja Bazaar and adjoining areas. People and shopkeepers had to pump their shops and house out. The rain caused extensive damage to roads, some of which had been re-laid only recently. Some buildings were also damaged. Nadeem Colony, Javed Colony, Muslim Colony, Dhoke Ratta, Ganjmandi, Jamia Masjid Road, Bani Chowk, Sadiqabad, Satellite Town, Commercial Market, College Road, Bohar Bazaar, Naya Mohallah, Iqbal Road, Purana Qila, Raja Bazaar, Kohati Bazaar, Mochi Bazaar, Mohanpura, Nanakpura, Arjan Nagar, Amarpura, Service Road along Murree Road, Kyhaban-e-Sir Syed and 7th Road were covered with knee-deep water. The rain upset normal life in the city with traffic coming to a standstill in Raja Bazaar, Jamia Masjid Road, Murree Road, Bank Road, The Mall, Chaklala Scheme-III, Westridge, Tench Bhatta, Kashmiri Bazaar, Gowalmandi, Rawal Road, Satellite Town, Sadiqabad, Muslim Town, Kuri Road, Shamsabad, Double Road, Sir Syed Road and Airport Road. Many trees and billboards were uprooted due to gusty winds along Airport Road, Rawal Road, Jhelum Road, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Road. No loss of life was reported, however. Power supply was restored at 7pm, shortly before Iftar in some parts of the city. IESCO officials said the IESCO had suspended electricity supply due to gusty winds that could make wires collide. Solid Waste Management District Officer Dr Mazhar Azeem said water was accumulated on Jamia Masjid Road, Asghar Mall Road, Saidpur Road, Airport Road due to construction work carried by different development agencies. He said low-lying areas along the banks of Leh Nullah like Nadeem Colony, Arya Mohallah, Ratta Amral, Dhok Dalal were safe. He said water level in Leh Nullah remained low as the rain did not occur in Islamabad and other areas. He said his department was draining water from main roads and removing the obstacles from the way of the water to flow into Leh Nullah.
