Beijing,
Around 6,244 infants have fallen ill and three others have died in China after consuming milk contaminated by melamine, the state media said here on Wednesday. While many had now recovered, 1,327 still remained in hospital, of whom 158 were suffering from acute kidney failure, the Xinhua news agency quoted officials from the ministry of health as saying.
The melamine-contaminated baby formula has so far caused at least three deaths. Melamine, an industrial chemical normally used to make plastics and glues, appears to have been added to make the products look rich in protein.
Meanwhile, the Sanlu Group, the company initially fingered as the alleged chief culprit, has fired its chairwoman and its general manager, the state media said. Four local officials, linked with agriculture and quality control, were also sacked on Tuesday.
