Three US scientists whose discoveries led to the use of the Viagra anti-impotence drug won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Robert Furchgott, Ferid Murad and Louis Ignarro were awarded the 7.6 million Swedish crown prize jointly for their discoveries about the role of nitric oxide-long considered just an air pollutant - as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system.
