Talcher: At least 35 villagers of Bhalugadia were arrested and court forwarded on Wednesday for obstructing Hingula coal mining operations. The villagers stopped the mining operations demanding jobs for 56 land losers as promised by colliery authorities. They accused the authorities of Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL) of not fulfilling their promises in giving jobs in lieu of their land.
Despite the arrests, work in the mine could not be resumed as it was blocked again in the evening by some women. Due to the agitation, there was no coal production or despatch from the coal mine that resulted in a production loss of around 15,000 tonne daily.
MCL management, on the other hand, refused the allegation. A senior officer of MCL said papers related to employment of a total of 115 villagers are being processed and would be settled soon.
