DINDIGUL: A total of 450 projects, including 128 supply channels, 192 tanks, one small irrigation works, three ooranis and 126 road works, were carried out under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in 2008-09, according to Collector M Vallalar.
He was inspecting desilting of Kongan tank under NREGS at G. Nadupatti village in Reddiyarchatram union here on Thursday.
A majority of the works taken up NREGS were creation of irrigation sources and improvement of groundwater table only. The main objective of these projects was to harvest rainwater in these sources and provide jobs to agricultural labourers.
Desilted supply channels carried entire quantum of rain water to rural tanks and ooranis without much wastage. Above all, farm labourers got jobs at least 100 days in a year, particularly during dry summer season where there were no agriculture activities, he added.
A total of 157 workers, including 157 women and 17 men have been engaging in tank desilting work at Kongan Kulam. He also enquired whether all workers at the work site have identity cards and received full wages prescribed under the NREGS.
The Collector also advised officials to monitor proper implementation of work.
