5 on richter scale quake hits Vindhya, Mahakaushal

Bhopal: A moderate intensity earthquake hit several places in Vindhya and Mahakaushal regions in Madhya Pradesh this morning, the Regional Meteorological Department said. Department’s Director D P Dubey told UNI over telephone that the tremor measuring 5 on the Richter scale was felt for a few seconds at 0803 hrs. The epicentre was near Shahdol at of 23.8 degree North Latitude and 81.4 degree East longitude.
The earthquake occurred at 08:03:29 AM IST. The epicentre of the earthquake was 27 kilometeres below earth surface. Geographically, the epicentre was 19 km North North West of Jaisinghnagar and 58 km North East of Umaria, near Shahdol.
The epicentre of the earthquake, of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale, was about 150 kms from Jabalpur division.
“It appears to be a low intensity earthquake with its epicentre nearly 150 kms away from Jabalpur,” a scientist in-charge of Observatory at Bargi hills near Jabalpur said.
According to a report from Shahdol, residents came out of their houses as the tremors — lasting about 4-10 seconds — struck. Mild tremors were felt in Umaria, Sidhi, Rewa and Dindori. There were no immediate reports of any casualty or damage.
Tremors were also felt in a few districts of Jabalpur division which are considered sensitive from seismic viewpoint. A major earthquake had struck Jabalpur more than a decade ago causing huge damage.
