Due to "poor" administration of the urban development ministry and state governments at least 72 projects for infrastructure development in five mega cities were dropped and 62 are yet to be started. On the recommendation of the National Commission on Urbanisation and demands by the state governments, the urban development ministry had approved 442 sponsored programmes for 442 sponsored programme for infrastructure development in mega-cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Sources in the ministry said that the primary objective of this theme was to undertake infrastructure development in association with the state governments and other financial institutions.
