900,000 babies born of teenagers

Teenagers in Brazil gave birth to 900,000 babies last year, thus accounting for 26.5 per cent of all live births in the country. Girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years gave birth to 1.23 per cent of last year's babies, while teenagers aged 15 to 19 accounted for 25.27 per cent, according to Ministry of Health statistics for 1997, disclosed at a seminar on teenage pregnancy held last week in Rio De Janeiro.
