Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the country's premier nuclear energy research institute, has for the first time used its technology to successfully recharge dry springs and aquifers in Rudraprayag district of Uttaranchal. The guiding spirit behind the efforts of BARC scientists is none other than their former chief Dr R Chidambaram. The present Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India went all the way to Golthir village in Gauchar on October 27 to see for himself the experiment done by BARC scientists in collaboration with Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO), a local voluntary group. In a pioneering effort, BARC scientists, using isotope hydrology technology, were able to recharge nearly 13 water sources that had dried up causing a severe water crisis in the area.
