In a significant development, Germany has decided to shut down its nuclear power programme, lock, stock and barrel in the coming two decades. One may immediately attribute the 'credit' to the Greens in the coalition government of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. A more credible reason is the growing conviction the world over that nuclear energy is neither cheap nor safe. (editorial)
