After more than 15 years of effort, US researchers have finally been able to puzzle out the three-dimensional structure of a key protein on the surface of the AIDS virus, a feat that provides the first good explanation why an infected person's immune system is unable to fight off the virus and why attempts to produce AIDS vaccines have been unsuccessful. The studies also suggest that there may be ways to circumvent those defences with either vaccines or drugs.
