GUWAHATI: The All Assam Shramik Krishak Kalyan Parishad (AASKKP) has decried the role of the State Government and the police in the atrocities being meted out on anti-dam protesters at Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district. In a meeting of the central executive committee of the workers’ body held in Guwahati today, the alleged police atrocities on the anti-dam protesters was strongly condemned.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, AASKKP general secretary Pradip Kalita said, “In the name of constructing dams, the government cannot harass the common people or farmers. Most of the anti-dam protesters are farmers and they are being subjected to various atrocities by the police. This will not be tolerated.”
On the recent allegation of rape levied against a member of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), the organization which is spearheading the anti-dam movement in the State, Kalita said, “This allegation is baseless. The husband of the woman who made the allegation was working for the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Clearly this is a conspiracy to defame the anti-dam movement. We will raise our voice against it because tomorrow a similar attempt may be made to frame my organization which has always been fighting for the cause of farmers and against corruption.”
In protest against the alleged atrocities against anti-dam protesters and to demand an immediate end to these atrocities, the AASKKP will be staging a demonstration at Dispur Last Gate on May 29. The activists of the organization will also burn effigies of the State Power Minister and Agriculture Minister.
