AIDS is cutting the life expectancy in many African countries and will reduce their populations within the next 10 to 15 years, according to a report to be released by the population division of the United Nations. The report, part of a world population survey, says AIDS has achieved pandemic proportions in several of 34 sub-Saharan countries, where at least one in four people is infected with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.
