PANJIM: The Goa unit of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has decided to file intervention application in the Supreme Court, seeking directives for immediate resumption of all legal mining operations in Goa. The application would be filed on November 2, when the ongoing case would be heard next.
Addressing a press conference, AITUC General Secretary Christopher Fonseca said that Goa Mining Labour Welfare Union under AITUC has been constituted, which would be filing the intervention petition in Supreme Court to put across all the facts affecting livelihood of mining dependent people, with the suspension of mining operations.
Fonseca said that the decision was taken during a meeting on October 14, wherein the trade union leaders representing mining workers and other stakeholders in the industry, unanimously resolved to approach the Court with their grievances.
Supreme Court in an order issued under public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Goa Foundation has currently halted all mining operations in Goa
“It was also decided to collect signatures from sections of people, including those dependent on mining industry, which could be placed before Supreme Court, seeking directions to start legal mining operations in the State, to protect the livelihood of these people”, he said adding ‘livelihood of around one lakh people who are dependent on mining is at stake due to uncertainty of mining’.
The labour union has also formed an action committee of 15 members which will spearhead and coordinate the movement of the mining dependent people and build bridges between mining stakeholders and their organisations.
The committee will also hold corner meetings throughout the State, especially in the mining belt before calling for a mega convention in Margao and Panjim respectively.
Fonseca said that union leaders will also be meeting all 40 MLAs, Member of Parliament and Governor of Goa seeking their effective intervention.
