A few simple tricks have enabled enabled Californian researchers to "rear" algae, enabling them to produce greater quantities of hydrogen as an energy source. The scientists found that a green alga of the Chlamydomonas Genus switches its metabolism to producing huge amounts of hydrogen when deprived of sulphur and oxygen. The findings are detailed in the Hamburg nature magazine Geo.
