In a significant departure from the NDA Government's line, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sought to shift the focus from "assimilation approach" for tribal development to an emphasis on bringing the Scheduled Tribes to the economic mainstream "without disturbing" the other spheres of their culture. While the draft tribal policy, prepared by the NDA Government in the beginning of this year and already put on the ministry's website for public debate, underlines the necessity of "assimilation approach as quicker way of bringing the tribals into mainstream of Indian society", the additional paper of the ministry has preferred the approach of integration by upholding the values and essence of traditional tribal culture and heritage.
