It has been one of the world's most enduring and passionate love affairs : Americans and their automobiles. Thereare a staggering 130m passenger cars and 70m other types of four-wheel vehicles in the US, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics for 1997. There are however signs that US drivers are quietly looking for alternatives to car usage-with growing backing from legislators.
