A majority of Americans oppose a Republican-backed plan to allow oil and gas drilling in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), according to a survey issued on Wednesday by a green group. The poll showed that 52 percent of those surveyed oppose changing the law to permit drilling in the refuge on Alaska's northern coast, while 35 percent support such an action, the Wilderness Society survey showed.
