The strength of microfinance organisations (MFOs) in India lies in the diversity of approaches and forms. Carried out by the alternative sector, dedicated NGOs reach out to the poorest of the poor in far-flung villages. Most NGOs depend on donations, but this is not adequate. When MFOs reach out to seek finance from the mainstream organisations, such as banks, questions are invariably asked regarding their organisational structure and even capital adequacy. (Editorial).
