Anti-big dam groups to continue their stir

GUWAHATI/NORTH LAKHIMPUR: The anti-big dam groups like the KMSS, Asom Jatiyatabadi Tuva Chattra Parishad, All Assam Deuri Students’ Union, TMPK and others have said that they would continue their protests against the Lower Subansiri Project on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Addressing the reporters jointly on Sunday, the members of the agitating groups, including KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi said that the anti-big dam groups would continue to block the transportation of construction materials to the Lower Subansiri Project site. The agitating groups also condemned the State authorities for destroying the observation camps set up by the groups to monitor the movement of the NHPC trucks towards the project site. From Monday, the agitating groups will stage a torchlight march across the State in protest against the Lower Subansiri Project and for few other demands. The groups would also stage sit-in-demonstration in all the district headquarters from May 16. Meanwhile, the 48-hour Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts bandh called by the KMSS and other anti-dam oganizations in protest against alleged police brutality on the picketers during a blockade against the transportation of construction materials and fuel to the NHPC dam site at Garukamukh, has paralyzed normal life in Lakhimpur district. All kinds of transportation, schools, colleges, offices, markets remained closed during the bandh period.
