The earth is in the middle of a vast traffic system of hurtling asteroids almost 1,000 of which present a potential threat to humanity, according to research published in Science journal on Thursday. A new study estimates that as many as 900 asteroids a km in diametre or larger have orbits which bring them uncomfortably close to earth. Some pass within a few moon distances of our planet every year, say US and French scientists.
