The Balram Talab Yojana is proving to be a great boon for score of farmers in Madhya Pradesh, where the scheme is helping them reap rich benefits by adding to the profitability of the exercise.
Meet Sushila Patidar of village Bhamesar in Manasa development block of Neemuch district, a determined lady farmer, who, until recently, could extract only one crop from her fields every year, due to inadequate irrigation facilities.
After she was informed of a State Government scheme helping farmers construct reservoirs on their fields, Sushila, armed with little except a firm resolve and determination, decided to draw on the benefits of the initiative.
She visited Neemuch and got a plan for the construction of the reservoir prepared with the help of an officer. Her efforts finally bore fruits and the reservoir was built under the Balram Talab Yojana at a cost of Rs 2 lakh.
The reservoir revolutionsed Sushila's fields and life, as she could now also reap a coriander crop from her fields, which, earlier, only sustained a single soybean harvest.
This year, Sushila sowed coriander in four out of six hectares of her farm and irrigated it thrice. As a result, she reaped a bumper harvest of 28 quintals (72 gunny bags) of coriander.
The profit she derived from the second crop of coriander helped her recover the entire investment she made for the construction of the Balram Talab, which will now help her double her annual income, by growing two crops every year.
Battling lack of irrigation facilities and struggling to make both ends meet until she adopted the State Government scheme, Sushila is now confident of her future and is helping others reap the benefits of the various farm welfare initiatives.
