Battle of the Housatonic pits GE against EPA

  • 26/07/1998

The Housatonic River is the site of the US's ugliest environmental battles, putting the Environmental Protection Agency against giant General Electric Co. Citing what is says is dangerous contamination with PCBs, the EPA has moved to designate an old GE plant and at least 30 miles of the Housatonic as a Superfund site, allowing the government to fund a massive cleanup and sue GE for triple the cost. GE is fighting the idea strenuously.
