Beijing clamps down on car pollution

  • 05/01/1999

In a bid to cut the high pollution levels in the Chinese capital, Beijing Muncipal Government is to issue special environmental protection licenses for autos whose tail gas emissions have reached the set standard for discharge, said Wang Guotao, Vice-Mayor of Beijing. The new system will be introduced early in 1999 and Wang said that the authorities will also ban cars which do not meet the required emission levels especially when air quality exceeds the normally, acceptable pollution ratio.
