Bhakra canal has 800 defects

Patiala: The Bhakra Mail Line is falling apart. Deprived of repairs since 1992, its banks have begun eroding and in some stretches, have been washed away. A breach is imminent if embankments are not mended urgently. A major disaster was averted early this May in Bheora village of Ropar district, when a rupture in BML was plugged in the nick of time. In 1999, Army had to be roped in to seal a perforation near Patran which had inundated 70 farmhouses and 3,000 acres of land in Patiala. The department has identified as many as 800
