Bhitarkanika home to 1610 crocodiles

KENDRAPARA: As many as 1610 estuarine crocodiles, including three reptiles measuring more than 20 feet, were sighted by the Forest officials in the water bodies of Bhitarakanika National Park during the week-long census, said Prasanna Kumar Behera, DFO, Bhitarkanika National Park. The census report indicates that the population of the endangered reptiles has marginally increased as last year the Forest officials had counted 1572 crocodiles. The census was carried out by the Forest officials, environmentalists, NGOs and locals from December 31 to January 8. The park was closed for visitors during the census. Out of 1610 crocodiles, there were 519 hatchlings, 373 yearlings, 298 juveniles, 150 sub-adults, 270 adults and three giants crocodiles measuring more than 20 feet, added the Forest officer.
