The Supreme Court has washed its hands off monitoring the relief and rehabilitation schemes for the Bhopal gas victims, asking the Madhya Pradesh High Court early this week to keep an eye henceforth on them. Pointing out irretrievable damage to health and environment for generations from avoidable disasters caused by human error or negligence, the Court said it was in situations where the laws are silent or inadequate that the courts have to unexceptionally step in to bridge the gaps, to provide for appropriate directions and guidelines. It also dissolved former Chief Justice of India A H Ahmadi- headed Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust running a 350- bed super- specialty hospital set up with funds from Union Carbide, whose plant leaked the gas, under its orders in 1988 and transferred its management and accounts to the health ministry.
