The South African government's decision to power the country's new-generation taxi fleet with diesel fuel has been criticised as a major "lost opportunity" to reduce air pollution. The Wildlife and Environment Society said that it supported all initiatives aimed at improving public transport, but that it was alarmed that the government continued to favour a dirty fuel such as diesel in preference to cleaner fuels or alternative technology.
