Bonn split over fuel rod tax plan

Gerhard Schroder, German chancellor, fases escalating difficulties within his coalition government after the environment ministry controlled by the Green Party backed controversial plans to tax nuclear fuel rods. The proposals from Jurgen Trittin, environment minister, were rejected by the economics ministry, headed by Werner Muller, who advised Mr Schroder on energy policy prior to the September election.
