In order to highlight the importance of forests for the country and the contribution of ICFRE in this vital sector of national importance, ICFRE has published a book Forestry in the Service of Nation: ICFRE Technologies. The book has been prepared with a view to provide a consolidated account of contributions made by the forestry sector over the years. VK Bahuguna, Director General, ICFRE, emphasised that through this book services rendered by the forests, foresters and forestry scientists and other researchers over the last more than 100 years will be known to the people, planners, administrators, politicians, researchers and students.
This publication will also draw the attention of the people and researchers at large and inform them about activities and achievements of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. Forests are not merely a resource but a vital resource base for sustaining various life forms on this planet. India is bestowed with diverse varieties of forests ranging from arid to evergreen forests and from mangroves to alpine forests, encompassing mega-biodiversity hot spots. The problems of such a complex and diverse forest ecosystem with more than one billion people depending on them for goods and services are complex and require innovative scientific acumen to understand and resolve.
The book reveals India’s legacy of more than 100 years of scientific management of forests. With a population of more than one billion and a rapidly growing economy, Vision 2020 of India will directly harp on natural resources, particularly forest ecosystems which are today certainly a matter of grave concern. It will provide a comprehensive view of technologies and processes developed by ICFRE and its institutes spread across the country. The readers will also have an idea about the history of scientific forestry in India, various functions of the forestry sector and achievements of the Council.
