British Chancellor of the Exchequer GordonBrown is facing mounting pressure to scrap steep automatic fuel tax rises as an industrial allianceattacked the policy for crippling Britain competitiveness. The fuel duty "escalator", devised by the government's Conservative predecessors to cut greenhouse gas emissions, was intended to run until 2002 but could be axed as early as next week, The Times newspaper reported yesterday.
