In a high-wire act intended to take the heat off the fuel protestros without giving the impression of caving into threats, the British Government is reported to have decided to freeze the duty on fuel until April 2002.This would mean removing the "fuel escalator" which automatically links fuel duty to inflation and an increase or fall in world oil prices. The decision, which would make fuel cheaper in real terms, is estimated to cost the Government 600 million pound.
