The fire and resultant losses at the manufacturing facility of Dishman Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Ltd on Saturday has raised a question about the ability of local fire safety agencies to deal with big chemical fires. It is the Ahmedabad Fire & Emergency Services (AFES) run by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) whose men are normally rushed to douse fires at chemical units in and around the city. Fires at chemical units constitute 10 per cent of the total fires reported in the city.
