KOLKATA, 18, Aug: The private bus and taxi owners will inform the state government about their decision regarding the transport strike shortly. The state transport minister Mr Ranjit Kundu today met leaders of taxi and bus owners to discuss the matter. Leaders of the taxi unions said they were not happy with the state government's decision to give Rs 2 subsidy on diesel. The running cost of taxis has gone high and already private financiers have seized 87 vehicles after their owners failed to repay loan. Moreover, many are yet to get the money from the state government as subsidy against replacement of old vehicles. The leaders further opposed the decision to get the subsidy from the public vehicles department. Nothing moves in the public vehicles department without bribe. The leaders expressed their unhappiness over the decision to give Rs 2 subsidy. The bus owners on the contrary are happy with the subsidy but added that the cut off date of the subsidy should be 1 August instead of 1 September as announced by the state government. They demanded that the workers should pay the fines imposed by the police for violating traffic rules or failing to produce documents or when the vehicle meets with an accident. Mr Kundu reiterated that the state government would not succumb to the pressure exerted by the bus and taxi owners. The state government has gone out of its way to give them subsidy, he said. sns
