The Union Cabinet has cleared the Electricity Bill, 2001 to be tabled in the current Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Bill, cleared at the Cabinet's meeting on Thursday, seeks to free power generation from licensing, while allowing captive power plants to sell their surplus power directly to bulk consumers without going through the grid operated by State electricity boards.
