Cabinet vetoes UN native plan

  • 20/12/1997

The Federal Government of Australia is trying to water down the United Nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples after attacks on the UN initiative by the One Nation Leader, Mrs Pauline Hanson. Cabinet has decided to oppose a clause in the draft declaration supporting 'self-determination'' for indigenous peoples. Instead, it will seek to replace the term with the words 'self-empowerment'' or 'self-management''. Aboriginal leaders have attacked the decision as 'political'', 'racist'' and an international embarrassment.
