A deal for a state takeover of California's power distribution grid could be announced very soon, according to Gray Davis, the state governor. In signs that patience is running out, Californian officials said Mr Davis would use legal powers if necessary to force utilities to sell, in a scheme crucial to the restructuring of the state's electricity supply networks.
