Leading marine fuel tester, DNV Petroleum Services, is campaigning for bunker samples to be taken at a single agreed point, that of custody trasfer, so that the sample can act as an 'umpire' in bunker disputes. A badly contaminated supply of bunker fuel containing highly abrasive material can quite literally destroy a ship's engine while on sea.
