The number of cancer patients in Assam and other parts of north eastern region is increasing with every passing year and according to Director of Dr. B Barooah Cancer Institute Dr. Gazi G Ahmed, the majority of the patients are of the age group of 45 to 55 years. In the year 1974-75, cancer cases in NE was only 290 and it increased to 5509 in 1996-97.
