An individual from Valayapalayam in Aravakurichi Taluk of Karur district has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court Bench here to quash a Government Order passed on December 31 sanctioning an interest bearing advance of Rs. 75 crore to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board for payment of compensation to 535 members of Noyyal River Ayacutdars' Protection Association.
Harmful effluents
The petitioner, R. Selvan, claimed that it was not appropriate to pay the compensation to the members of one association alone when actually 28,596 individuals had been affected due to the dying factories in Tiruppur which had polluted the Noyyal River and the Orathupalayam dam constructed across it by letting out harmful effluents.
When the matter came up for hearing on Wednesday, a Division Bench comprising Justice Chitra Venkataraman and Justice R. Karuppiah directed Special Government Pleader M. Govindan to take notice on behalf of the Environment and Forest Department Secretary and adjourned the matter by two weeks.
