Caspian oil poses environmental challenge

A new offshore oil exploration project in an area of extreme environmental sensitivity in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea has pitted ecologists against Western oil companies who say their techniques are safe. The Offshore Kazakhstan International Company, a nine-member consortium, drilled its first test well on August 12th at the Kashagan structure, 40 km from the coast in a water depth of less than four metres.
