The Union government has abandoned 33 projects after incurring an expenditure of Rs 1207.17 crore. So much for fiscal prudence and expenditure management. Senior government sources said that projects under the administrative control of ministries in coal and mines, fertilisers, petroleum, power, railways, shipping and ports have been dropped. According to a senior official in the ministry of planning and programme implementation, "in some cases the projects have been launched without adequate preparation but in some cases there are uncontrollable reasons.'
