The strenuous and concerted efforts of Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar yielded positive results. At a meeting with the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nripendra Mishra, held in New Delhi on Saturday, hurdles coming in the way of construction of Kishau multi-purpose project (MPP) have been removed. It was decided at the meeting, also attended by Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary P Mitra, that the Central Government would bear 90 percent cost of construction of the project. The claim of the Himachal Pradesh Government from Uttarakhand to 50 percent of enhanced power generation through downstream hydro power projects has been rejected. Now, Uttarakhand has to give only 25 per cent income of power generation in downstream projects as of now. The Central Government has directed both the States to form a joint venture in a month, so that the construction of MPP could be started soon as possible. It may be recalled that Kishau multi-purpose project (MPP) with 660 MW installed capacity has been taken up by the Central Government as a national project, as it would benefit five States excluding Uttarakhand. It is proposed to be built over Tons river, the major tributary of Yamuna river, at the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It will generate 1379 million units electricity after commissioning and additional generation of 472 million units in downstream projects of Uttarakhand. Kishau MPP will have 1324 MCM (million cubic metre) storage of water in its reservoir for irrigation and drinking water. It will irrigate 97076 hectare land and provide 617 MCM drinking water. It will also provide 79 MCM water to Delhi, 445.56 MCM to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, 633 MCM to Haryana, 123 MCM to Rajasthan and 41.7 MCM to Himachal Pradesh.
