LUCKNOW: With poll bugles about to be sounded, Uttar Pradesh is at the receiving end of state and Central doles. After the Mayawati government, earlier this week, gave its nod to the transfer policy for teachers of primary schools in the state, the Centre has also decided to not stay behind. In an effort to show its pro-people stance, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has now sanctioned the electrification of 507 villages and hamlets of Uttar Pradesh under the Remote Village Electrification (RVE) programme. Run by the Union ministry, under Remote Village Electrification (RVE) programme, the Centre will provide financial support for the electrification of those remote census villages and hamlets of electrified census villages where grid-extension is either not feasible or is not cost-effective. Electrification for UP's 507 villages and hamlets has been done on the basis of a state government undertaking that they are not covered under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana. For its implementation, the Union government will bear 90% of the total costs for the electrification work. This will include the Centre providing basic facilities for electricity and lighting through a range of renewable energy sources. Depending upon the availability of resources in the concerned region, the funds can also be used by the state to set up small hydro-power generation systems, biomass gasification based electricity generation systems or solar photovoltaic power plants, in distributed power generation mode. Curiously, though the state government sent a proposal asking for a sanction for electrification of these villages and hamlets, the exact details of each of the selected villages and hamlets have not been updated on the state government's website. Though the department of Additional Energy Sources, in charge of implementing the programme in UP, has electrified 50 such remote villages earlier and 99 remote villages between 2006 and 2009, no details of the projects undertaken since then have been updated.
