Cheaper power for farms

The Maharashtra government today came one step closer to Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray's desire of providing fee electricity to farmers by announcing drastic cuts in the electricity tariff for the over 22 lakh farmers in the state. The decisions, which will be come into effect from April 1 will add a burden of Rs 181 crore to the state exchequer. Besides this, the state cabinet also decided to waive the outstanding bills of farmers if they paid at least 50 per cent of due as on September 30, 1998 by May-end.
