The looming closure of one ofCalifornia's last offshore fields may mark the last chapter of a troubled era of costly oil andenvironmental concerns. Citing high costs, Chevron Corp. said last week it had begun halting production at the Point Arguello field where it is sole operator and one of several owners. "This is the closing chapter of a long troubled, poorly performing investment," said Deutsche Bank Securities analyst Michael Young.
