China gives priority to developing new energy sources

The Chinese government has worked out a series of favorable policies to support the development of various new and renewable energy sources focussing on hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal and tidal sources. To date, the country's annual utilization rate of new and renewable energy has reached 300 million tons of standard coal, accounting for a quarter of the total national consumption of primary energy and over 47 percent of energy consumption in rural areas, according to a senior official with the State Development and Planning Commission.
